This 1880 US Federal Census record is the digitized image of the actual record book annotated by the enumerator back on June 4th of 1880. It is, however, in "negative image" and therefore appears as white on black.
Our family record appears as the last entry on this page of the book. Peter is listed with his wife, Catherine and seven children. The eighth child, Carl, appears at the top of the next page of the record, but we are currently unable to access that page. Presume that he is there with the family, and is listed at 7 months old.
The ages are consistent with the information we have. Peter is 60 years old. Catherine is 39. The age and birth year of John is speculative, although in this case, it seems to be correct. At age 14, in 1880, John would have been born in 1866. There is valid documentation to affirm the ages of the other children.
Peter's occupation is listed as "farmer and stone mason". He and wife Catherine were born in Prussia, as were their parents. John and Michael were also born in Prussia, but the other children were all born in Wisconsin.
Apparently Peter and Catherine cannot write English, but are able to read and understand it. At this stage, John and Michael are unable to read or write English. As indicated, none of the children had attended school in the five months prior to the census.
One interesting fact has arisen from this census record. Our data had previously concluded that Catherine died in 1879, this from records obtained from the Mormon, (LDS), archives. We speculated that she died in childbirth when Carl was born, (November 5, 1879). No, as a result of this finding, further validation is necessary.
(The file size for the census is rather large and will take a few seconds to fully materialize. When ready to leave the page, look for the "Continue" prompt at the bottom of the census page).
